Where does one start learning Oracle?[edit]
It is not that difficult to start learning Oracle. Here are some guidelines:
- The best book for beginner is the "Oracle Server Concepts Guide". This manual is part of the Oracle documentation set that is available on the documentation CD and in hard copy format.
- Buy a good Oracle Reference Guide and study it. For Oracle DBAs, get one of the "Complete References" from Oracle Press. See the Oracle Books Section for details. Developers need to study one or more database programming languages like PL/SQL, SQLJ, Pro*C, etc.
- Get as much hands-on experience as you can on 'real' Oracle databases. You can even try to install Oracle at home on a Linux or Windows machine and play around with it. Oracle software products can be downloaded from the Oracle OTN website.
- Get a job. Try to find a company that is prepared to train you.
- Complete one of the Oracle Certification Program exam tracks.
Value of a decent resume[edit]
Only a good resume will get you an interview. Spending some time on it is crucial. However, building a resume is outside the scope of this site. The following on-line resume builders might help you getting started:
Breaking into the market as an entry level applicant[edit]
The first thing you need to do is to find an entry-level Oracle position. Without a job you will not get far. If you are inexperienced, look for an organization that would be willing to train you.
Once employed, ensure you get along with everyone and do each job you are assigned in excess of your bosses' expectations. Learn to anticipate requests from the team you work with, then how to problem-solve within that particular organization. If you are arrogant and feel you are over qualified for the menial tasks you are assigned, find some way to convince other people that this is not the case.
